Where am I?
Identify the unit, concept, or learning target.
Student Why design evidence • September 8, 2026
A governed Student Why update on instructional orientation, learning-target recall, and the boundary between formative student evidence and broader research claims.
Canonical evidence record
The learner reported difficulty identifying what Algebra I was currently covering and described her immediate experience in terms of trying to get through the course rather than navigating a clearly remembered instructional sequence. Earlier Student Why evidence had already identified memorability, repeated presentation patterns, independent note reconstruction, and the need to make unit transitions explicit.
This update therefore advances a design question rather than a causal conclusion: Can a learner participate in or complete coursework while lacking a sufficiently clear representation of the current learning target, its place in the sequence, or the conceptual goal that distinguishes today's work from prior work?
Emerging construct
For Student Why design purposes, instructional orientation is the learner's ability to identify the current learning target, distinguish it from prior instructional content, locate it within the course sequence, and describe what successful understanding should look like.
Identify the unit, concept, or learning target.
Connect the target to prior knowledge and the course sequence.
Define evidence of understanding beyond completion alone.
Student Why learning-design architecture
This sequence is an emerging research-and-design architecture. It does not replace the Academy's public WHY → Understanding → Procedure → Practice → Mastery philosophy or the Notice → Explore → Practice → Demonstrate → Reflect evidence-maturity cycle.
PDPK research bridge
Recent South Carolina mathematics data and peer-reviewed longitudinal studies justify investigating whether aggregate recovery can coexist with prerequisite-domain weaknesses that become visible in later mathematics. The learner record is used only to generate and refine questions about instructional orientation, prerequisite knowledge, and transfer. It is not treated as diagnostic evidence of Pandemic-Disrupted Predicate Knowledge.
The Loop
The September 8 record activates the existing Student Why feedback loop: preserve the learner's report, bound its interpretation, convert the observation into a testable design requirement, and evaluate whether the resulting intervention improves the targeted learning behavior.
